Country music duo Joey + Rory‘s artistry is truly timeless and should be appreciated for many years to come. Just weeks before Joey Feek’s passing due to cervical cancer on March 4, 2016, the couple released their seventh and final studio album Hymns That Are Important to Us.
The record debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums and Top Christian Albums charts and number four on the Billboard 200, with first week sales of 68,000 copies, making the album the pair’s highest-charting project and best sales week. In February 2017, the album won a Grammy Award in the ‘Best Roots Gospel Album’ category.
Rory Feek accepted the award prior to the televised portion of the Grammy Award ceremony, stating, “My wife’s dream was to make a hymns album. We sat together in the final days and watched this awards ceremony last year, and she said, ‘If we get nominated promise me you will come.’ I said, ‘I will,’ and she got a big smile on her face and she said, ‘Remember if we win, I’ll know before you will.’”
Let’s take a look back and enjoy Joey + Rory‘s outstanding and heartfelt talent!
“I’ll Fly Away”
Some bright morning when this life is over I’ll fly away
To that home on God’s celestial shore I’ll fly away
I’ll fly away oh glory I’ll fly away
When I die hallelujah bye and bye I’ll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone I’ll fly away
Like a bird from prison bars have flown I’ll fly away
Oh how glad and happy when we meet I’ll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet I’ll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then I’ll, I’ll fly away
To a land where joy will never end I’ll fly away
“How Great Thou Art”
Oh Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made
I see the stars
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout
The universe displayed
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art
How great thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
And when I think of God,
His son not sparing,
Sent Him to die,
I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden
gladly bearing He bled and died
to take away my sin
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art
How great thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
When Christ shall come
With shout of acclamation
And take me home
What joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow
With humble adoration
And then proclaim My God
How great Thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
“The Old Rugged Cross”
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best,
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
“Take My Hand, Precious Lord”
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near
When my light is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home (lead me home)
