Country music superstar Jason Aldean and vocal powerhouse Kelly Clarkson’s “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was released in 2010. Believe it or not, the powerful duet wasn’t originally intended for these two stars. The hit, written by Andy Gibson, Paul Jenkins, and Jason Sellers, was going to instead feature country artist Andy Gibson’s solo vocals. The writers envisioned a song that contained relatable lyrics and consisted of words that men would actually use.
“Not like flowery poetry and all the things that none of us could ever think of … something your everyday average guy would think of. So that’s what we came up with,” Gibson explained to The Boot.
Eventually, the song made it over to Aldean, which led to his decision to make it a duet. The Georgia native felt the tune needed two vocalists and he knew he wanted American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson to be his duo partner. “I’ve always been a big fan of hers. I love her voice, and I love her style. Long story short, we got her a copy of the song, and she loved it,” Jason admitted.
The renowned country star made the right decision in choosing Kelly as a partner, the single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, was certified double Platinum, and received many award nominations.
