Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush are back in the groove with the start of their Still the Same Tour on May 4th and the release of their upcoming album, Bigger, on June 8th.
The country duo recently shared details about their sixth studio album. The record, co-produced by Bush and Nettles, features 11 songs, 10 of which they co-wrote. The only song they didn’t help write – “Babe” – which was co-written by former country music star Taylor Swift and Train’s lead singer, Pat Monahan. Despite their heavy involvement in every aspect of their latest album, they admit that the project is unpredictable.
“This album has a whole bunch of mystery,” Bush said, according to Nash Country Daily. “I’m listening to it every two days just to see what’s in it. I have entire pints of blood in that thing, but I still don’t know where it all came from, and I love that.”
Additionally, “Babe” came about in a non-traditional way. Taylor Swift, who is a fan of Sugarland, contacted them about a song she had written and wanted to see if they would be the ones to sing it. Of course they agreed!
“We’ve never really put a song by anyone else on our records,” Bush said, according to Billboard. “So we weren’t really used [to] sorting through that and we didn’t want to mess it up, so we didn’t tell anybody until we got it finished and she liked it. Thank God. Because it is a good song.” Swift’s vocals can also be heard on the track.
Bigger is about doing more within their music careers, especially as music changes with time. The country duo acknowledges the changing trends and embraces the challenge of consistently creating music that people will love.
“We have always enjoyed playing in the margins and stretching the format,” Nettles said. “But it’s fun to have taken this time away and seen how the format has expanded and how music has evolved. Before, we were playing in the margins. Now, the margins have moved, and that’s fun to hear.”
Fifteen weeks after it’s release, Sugarland’s lead single, “Still the Same,” is sitting at No. 49 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart. Their new album is now available for pre-order, too! Be sure to check it out.
