Scotty McCreery‘s wife, Gabi Dugal McCreery, has been at his side since they were just kids! It seems like just yesterday that Scotty McCreery won American Idol in 2011. Now, the North Carolina native is a full-fledged country star and a married man! On June 16, 2018, the singer-songwriter married his his longtime love.
“We’ve been dating six years and have known each other our whole lives. That kind of story doesn’t happen too often nowadays,” Scotty shared with PEOPLE before the wedding. “I support her dreams and she supports mine.”
“I’ve been planning this moment for so long that it feels surreal for it to have finally happened,” McCreery reflected via a statement following the ceremony. “Gabi is the perfect girl and my true love, and I cannot wait to begin building our life together as husband and wife.”
The couple met while they were kindergartners in elementary school. Apparently, she used to write “Mrs. Gabi McCreery” in her diary with hearts surrounding it.
The brunette beauty graduated from the University of North Carolina in 2016 and is a pediatric nurse. In order for the couple to spend quality time together, she often requests weekend shifts. This has proven to be the perfect setup for the couple because it works with Scotty’s normal tour schedule and gives them weekdays together.
“Oh, she’s incredible,” McCreery shared with Kix Brooks on American Country Countdown. “I mean, she’s just a breath of air for me and the crazy world I see every day I travel, but when I come home, I just have a consistent love and an amazing woman that I get to come home to every day. She works hard — she’s a nurse — I mean, she’s doing the hard stuff. I get to sing for a living, but she’s really changing lives.”
When small inconveniences pop up, Scotty often finds himself thinking of the real life issues his wife encounters at work.
“We get to complaining about little things on the road, like if our bus Wi-Fi’s not working,” McCreery explained. “And, we’re like, ‘Man, that’s such a little thing compared to what a lot of folks are dealing with,’ so when I hear what she sees at work, you realize what’s important in life.”
Gabi left her position at Duke University Hospital in March 2020. She is currently opening a new chapter in her nursing career!
