Country music starlet Kelsea Ballerini's "Yeah Boy" has a rather odd origin story and even stranger muse. More on the matter here...

The Kelsea Ballerini Yeah Boy song was released in 2015 as a track on her “The First Time” album.  When you think of country loves songs images of pretty girl next door types and handsomely rugged country boys instantly flood your mind. Well, when it comes to Kelsea Ballerini’s hit song “Yeah Boy,” the inspiration came from an unusual source— Flavor Flav. Yes, the 58-year-old rapper and television personality who’s known for his unmistakable signature phrase,”Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”

It’s a little shockingly out of context, but here’s the story— When co-writing the song with Forest Glen Whitehead and Keesy Timmer, 23-year-old Ballerini was recalling a Super Bowl commercial which featured Flavor Flav and his notorious exclamation. With this audio in her latent memory, a song with virtually no relation to the rapper was born.

“I went into this write and I had that commercial … in my head,” the songbird recalled to Taste of Country. “We spent like 30 minutes Googling this commercial and it’s a Super Bowl commercial for Doritos. And Flavor Flav is the ‘Yeah boy!’”

Obviously the singer-songwriter’s unexpected muse lead to a massive success! “Yeah Boy” peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Country chart and No.3 on the Country Airplay chart upon its release in October 2016. In December of that year, the colorful 90’s-esque music video for “Yeah Boy” was uploaded to her Vevo channel on YouTube. As of March 2017, “Yeah Boy” has sold 144,000 copies in the U.S.

Sadly, Flav didn’t make a cameo appearance in Kelsea’s “Yeah Boy” music video.

Kelsea Ballerini Yeah Boy Lyrics

Captured my attention, make my heart stop and listen
When you look my way
Blue jeans and a ball cap, thinking that you’re all that
And I’m thinking the same
You got that something in your eyes, I think about it all the same
If you ever wonder if I wanna make you mine
Yeah, boy
I’m digging what you’re doing
Yeah, boy
I’m trying to keep it cool
But you’re making it hard, I’m wishing your arms
Were wrapping me up tight
Yeah, boy
You shine and you can’t even help it
Yeah, boy
Your eyes could make the moon jealous
And if you wanna know if I wanna be your girl tonight
Yeah, boy
Every song that’s playing gets me thinking about you, baby
And the way you roll
So let’s put down the drop top, burn a little blacktop
Off of that road
Baby, what we waiting on?
The stars are out, the night is young
If you wanna know if I wanna go and get gone
Yeah, boy
I’m digging what you’re doing
Yeah, boy
I’m trying to keep it cool
But you’re making it hard, I’m wishing your arms
Were wrapping me up tight
Yeah, boy
You shine and you can’t even help it
Yeah, boy
Your eyes could make the moon jealous
And if you wanna know if I wanna be your girl tonight
Yeah, boy
Yeah, boy
I wanna take a little ride with you
Yeah, boy
I wanna spend a little time with you
Yeah, boy
I wanna sip a little wine with you, oh
Yeah, boy
I wanna take a little ride with you
Yeah, boy
I wanna spend a little time with you
Yeah, boy
I wanna sip a little wine with you, oh
Yeah, boy
I’m digging what you’re doing
Yeah, boy
I’m trying to keep it cool
But you’re making it hard, I’m wishing your arms
Were wrapping me up tight
Yeah, boy
You shine and you can’t even help it
Yeah, boy
Your eyes could make the moon jealous
And if you wanna know if I wanna be your girl tonight, yeah
Yeah, boy
Yeah, boy
Yeah, boy
