After Hurricane Harvey, Texas-country musician Koe Wetzel pledged ticket sales at an upcoming concert to help out the relief effort for hurricane victims.
Texas is a close knit community and when tragedy strikes the whole state seems to ban together. This was this case when on August 25th, while Hurricane Harvey was still barreling down on southeast Texas, country musician Koe Wetzel decided to pledge all ticket sales at an upcoming show in San Marcos, Texas to go directly to those in need after the storm passed.
Wetzel later announced that the show had been sold out and raised an amazing amount of money for computer giant Michael Dell’s Rebuild Texas Foundation.
“A couple weeks ago we decided to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Y’all sold out Cheatham Street in San Marcos and raised 10k for this great cause. With that, we have decided to give it all to the Rebuild Texas Fund. Thanks so much to all who came out and God Bless Texas!” Wetzel said on social media.
Koe Wetzel is from east Texas, specifically a town called Stephenville, home to Texas songwriting legend Larry Joe Taylor. With minimal radio airplay and over a million streams on Spotify, Wetzel is quickly becoming a household name in the Texas country scene, the same scene that produced acts such as Pat Green and Midland.
Wetzel seems to be on the path to break out of the region with a recent opening spot for Warner Music Nashville’s Cole Swindell in New Braunfels, Texas. Although Wetzel still remains an independent artist at this time.
Wetzel’s most recent release is 2017’s Noise Complaint, which was released independent of a record label and is his second studio project. The 12-track record features the break out song “February 28, 2016” which is a catchy, drunken balled about spending a night drinking and craving Taco Bell. The melody is ridiculously memorable and college students gravitated to it in an instant making Wetzel a virtual overnight success with the ability to sell out shows all over Texas.
Luckily, Wetzel is using that power to raise money for Hurricane victims and give back to the Texas community.
