Sturgill Simpson Mourns Loss of Influential Grandfather

Grammy award winner Sturgill Simpson's grandfather, Lawrence "Dood" Fraley, passed away last Wednesday. Read his heartfelt tribute here.

On March 15, Sturgill Simpson shared the sad news of his grandfather’s death through Facebook, and Simpson’s fans were quick to offer up their condolences. In the sentimental post, the Kentucky native describes the impact his “Papaw” had on him.

“My Papaw taught me to play Country music and more importantly, he taught me to love Country music. Above all else that has happened in my life and career in the last four years, nothing comes close to knowing that he lived long enough to see it as he could not have been more proud.”

Another effect Fraley had was the ability to positively shape Simpson’s life. The country singer looked up to his grandpa as a role model, and he credits Fraley for encouraging him to pursue a better lifestyle.
