Although many country artists record songs written by outside songwriters, Troy Gentry of Montgomery Gentry helped write quite a few songs.
Many country artists record songs written by other songwriters. So when the artist writes songs to perform himself, it doesn’t go unnoticed. When it comes to country duo Montgomery Gentry, quite a few of their songs were co-penned by both Troy Gentry and Eddie Montgomery. However, this list of eight songs honors the late Troy Gentry’s songwriting abilities.

“Talking to My Angel” – This heartfelt song appears on Montgomery Gentry’s 2004 album titled You Do Your Own Thing. Troy Gentry helped pen this song with Michael Dulaney and Jason Sellers. It reflects on a battle with drinking, talking to his angel to help him become the person he wants to be: a stronger man and a better dad.
“Takes All Kinds” – On Some People Change from 2006, Montgomery Gentry sings about different types of people driving on the highway and how they are all needed to make the world go around. It speaks to many problems today’s society, leaving an important message that everyone belongs in this world, even if there are many different opinions.
“If You Wanna Keep an Angel” – Also from Some People Change, this song by the country duo was co-penned by Troy Gentry, Tom Shapiro and Rivers Rutherford. It admires the ladies, one in particular that is an “angel,” and how he probably doesn’t deserve her. Therefore, he is trying his hardest to keep her.
“Simple Things” – This song reflects on the little, simple things that make life so precious. From Rebels on the Run, Troy Gentry, Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher write about the Fourth of July, fishing and driving down dirt roads. “Work Hard, Play Harder” – Starting out with a dedication to hard-working Americans, this Montgomery Gentry song is full of patriotism. It tells listeners to cut loose, take a break from the hard work and have some fun on the weekends! Troy Gentry co-wrote the song alongside Jim Collins and Rivers Rutherford, and it appears on the 2011 album Rebels on the Run.
“Titty’s Beer” – This song was written by Troy Gentry, Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman. However, Colt Ford also sings a version of this song featuring Trent Tomlinson on his album Every Chance I Get. The fun play on words comes from Uncle Titus who wanted to make his own beer, and the song celebrates the fun of promoting, selling and drinking it!
Troy Gentry also helped pen a song called “Freedom Never Goes Out of Style” with Eddie Montgomery, Gary Hannah and Phil O’Donnell. The track was going to be on Freedom, the country duo’s seventh studio album. However, they left the label before it was released.
