Songwriting powerhouse Old Dominion released their debut album this past week and their fans are loving Meat and Candy. The album, which features 11 tracks, was produced by GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter and producer, Shane McAnally.
“When we were kids sitting in our rooms with our guitars and Rolling Stone magazines, this is THE moment we were imagining for ourselves,” Old Dominion said at the time their album was announced.
“As musicians and songwriters, we are very proud of every song on the album. We are looking to turn some heads and make some big noise here. We’re stepping out there on stage with the big boys and girls and our hope is that this album will prove we deserve to be there.”
Old Dominion is Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Whit Sellers, Geoff Sprung, and Brad Tursi, who all saw success as songwriters for some of the biggest names in country music.
“Break Up With Him” is the only song of the 11 on Meat and Candy that didn’t get pitched to another artist. Old Dominion knew that song was special, and it ultimately became their first No. 1 hit.
Ramsey tells Radio.com that the idea doe the the album title came from deciding what songs would be included in the album.
“Meat and Candy comes from when we were sitting down trying to figure out what songs we were gonna record. We had a list, we made a list of the ones we thought we were gonna record. As we were looking over that list, there seemed to be a lot of “candy” songs; fun, singalong kind of songs, and we just knew as a band, and as songwriters, we were capable of more than that too.” Ramsey says.
“So somebody said, “We need some meat in there too. We need meat and candy.” And our producer, Shane McAnally, was just joking, he said “We should call the album ‘Meat and Candy,’” and we never looked back from there. We just wrote it down, and we said, “Absolutely, that’s the name.” Ramesey continues.
Old Dominion spent the past summer playing shows with Kenny Chesney, and have already agreed to go out with him again on the 2016 Spread the Love Tour.
Meat and Candy was released on Friday (Nov. 6).
