Thanks to social media, it has never been easier for country stars to bond with their fans. In fact, Luke Combs partially credits social media for his meteoric rise to fame. “I think it’s uncharted territory,” Combs shared with The Boot backstage at the 2018 CMA Awards. “I think guys like myself and Kane Brown and Dan + Shay are really lucky to be in a circle of artists who have started things on their own and then been kind of adopted by the Nashville system.” The platform allows artists to build relationships with fans long before they score a record deal. Supporters can follow their favorite amateur artists on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.
However, the “Beautiful Crazy” singer started his career covering old-time country songs, gaining him over 13,000 followers on Vine. Combs dropped his first EP without a label. After he moved to Nashville, the North Carolina began working with professionals. “I’ve always believe in music being very much a team effort,” Combs added. “I don’t wanna say ‘building a brand’ — that sounds too cookie cutter.”
Luke Combs understands that a record label and professional help is essential to building his fanbase, but he still enjoys marketing himself.
“If I do this consistently over three or four years, [if you connect a team to] someone like me or Kane Brown or Maren Morris, or whoever it may be, it’s an unstoppable force, because we have taken ourselves to a certain level,” Combs continued. “And then that staff comes in and puts their expertise behind us. I think that’s a really special thing, and I’m lucky to be one of the guys at the forefront of that thing right now.”
