The Texas Legislative Conference has named country music icon George Strait as the “2018 Texan of the Year.” The star will accept the unique honor on March 22nd at the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center. The Texas Legislative Conference is a nonpartisan organization of business and political leaders that meets each year to discuss policy issues.
“No one has done more than George Strait to raise awareness and funds for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts,” Doug Miller, Conference Chair and former Texas State Representative, shared in a statement. “He put his well-earned reputation on the line and asked not only his fellow Texans to step up, but all Americans. And they have.”
Thus far, the proud Texas native has raised more than $50 million to aid those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Past recipients of this distinction include George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Kay Bailey Hutchison, T. Boone Pickens, and Lady Bird Johnson.
Strait’s country music career spans over 30 years and includes over 60 No. 1 singles, more than any other artist in any genre. In 2006, the superstar was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Strait’s 33 platinum or multi-platinum-selling albums are more than any other country artist and third across all genres behind only The Beatles and Elvis Presley. He has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and has earned more than 60 major entertainment awards.

Congrats to King George on scoring this recognition. In celebration, enjoy his 1982 hit “Amarillo By Morning” below!
“Amarillo By Morning” Lyrics
Amarillo by mornin’
Up from San Antone
Everything that I got
Is just what I’ve got on
When that sun is high in that Texas sky
I’ll be buckin’ at the county fair
Amarillo by mornin’
Amarillo, I’ll be there
They took my saddle in Houston
Broke my leg in Santa Fe
Lost my wife and a girlfriend
Somewhere along the way
But I’ll be lookin’ for 8 when they pull that gate
And I hope that judge ain’t blind
Amarillo by mornin’
Amarillo’s on my mind
Amarillo by mornin’
Up from San Antone
Everything that I got
Is just what I’ve got on
I ain’t got a dime but what I got is mine
I ain’t rich but Lord I’m free
Amarillo by mornin’
Amarillo’s where I’ll be
Amarillo by mornin’
Amarillo’s where I’ll be
