According to Variety, country music entertainer Reba McEntire is set to star in a new NBC television series based on “Fried Green Tomatoes”! The hour-long show is described as a modernized version of the novel and movie that explores the lives of descendants from the original work. The program will revolve around a present-day Idgie Threadgoode (McEntire) as she returns to Whistle Stop after a decade away. She must wrestle with a changed town, an estranged daughter, a faltering café, and a life-changing secret.
The novel “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg was originally published in 1987. The film version was released in 1991 and starred Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Cicely Tyson.
As fans know so well, Reba previously starred in the self-titled television sitcom “Reba” for six seasons and has also appeared in other programs such as “Young Sheldon,” “Last Man Standing,” and “Frasier”.
