The pair was nominated for countless honors and at the end of the night ended up taking home the Country Duo/Group honor! What makes this award even more special was that it was their first Billboard Music Award! Dan + Shay took to their official Instagram page to thank fans and express their excitement by captioning the post, “We won our very first @bbmas last night thanks to the amazing fans who listen to the music and the radio stations who play it. we also got to fanboy in the crowd for all the incredible performances. music is really awesome.”
Performing “Speechless” on such a memorable night in their careers was only fitting. After all, the song is about one of the most special and memorable days of both their lives!
“I had this title ‘Speechless’ in my phone — you’re at the altar waiting for your bride to walk down the aisle, then that moment happens and you have nothing to say,” Dan recalls from his wedding day. “I remember being up there on our wedding day – May 13, just a little over a year ago – and she walked up and I was at a loss for words.”
Dan married his bride, Abby, back in 2017 and Shay followed suit just a few months later with his sweetheart, Hannah. They wrote the song shortly after their big days so that they would never forget the precise feeling of seeing their beautiful brides walk down the aisle.
