It’s official— country music phenom Chris Stapleton has scored his first No. 1 single on country radio this week with “Broken Halos.” The emotional tune has reached the peak of the Mediabase chart this week, bumping Thomas Rhett’s “Marry Me” out of the top position.
The track was co-written by Stapleton alongside Mike Henderson and served as the second single to be released from his second studio album From A Room: Volume 1. “Broken Halos” won the award for ‘Best Country Song’ at the 60th Grammy Awards and is also nominated for ‘Single Record of the Year’ at the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards.
Surprisingly enough, “Broken Halos” is also the Kentucky native’s first-ever Top 10 single. Watch Stapleton perform the song live on the Howard Stern Show below!
During Universal Music Group’s 2017 Country Radio Seminar luncheon at the Ryman Auditorium, Stapleton shared the personal story behind the song.
“I recorded this on the day a friend of mine passed away from pancreatic cancer. He was the same age as me; we played Little League together, stuff like that,” Stapleton expressed. “He was 38 years old.”
“Broken Halos” Lyrics
Seen my share of broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They’ve all gone wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine
Angels come down from the heavens
Just to help us on our way
Come to teach us, then they leave us
And they find some other soul to save
Seen my share of broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They’ve all gone wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine
Don’t go looking for the reasons
Don’t go asking Jesus why
We’re not meant to know the answers
They belong to the by and by
They belong to the by and by
Seen my share of broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They’ve all gone wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine
Broken halos that used to shine
