Of course this Oklahoman has always had the vocal talent to become a country music star, but Carrie Underwood’s mother, Carole, didn’t realized the scope of her youngest daughter’s abilities.
“We never even considered that she could win it at all, but at least maybe she could have some face and name recognition, and she would get to be an anchor or something on one of our local TV shows in Tulsa,” Carole just shared with TODAY‘s Sheinelle Jones.
Carrie was within one semester of graduating from Northeastern State University with a degree in mass communication when she convinced her mom to accompany her to the American Idol auditions in St. Louis, Missouri.
Moving on to Hollywood didn’t stop Carrie from being nervous about appearing on the show. While competing, the future star “always dreaded Tuesdays and hated Wednesdays.”
“Her song was going to go on Tuesday, and so I always had to pray that she would be able to hit that high note, and that she would carry the tune like it was supposed to be,” Carole shared. “It was just too harrowing for me. And I’m sure it was for her, too.”
As we all know, Carrie won American Idol Season 4 and her family had no idea what would come out of it.
“It didn’t really dawn on me at that particular moment what was possibly going to happen,” Carrie Underwood’s mother confessed. “Up to this time, it was just a competition. She won, and then my next thought (was) ‘Well, we’re do we go from here?’ You know? ‘I don’t know how to do anything about any of this.'”
Although Carrie is the most successful American Idol winner and is now a country music superstar, Carole will always just see her as her daughter.
