As we all know, country music superstar Carrie Underwood suffered a fall at her home in Nashville last November. The accident resulted in a broken wrist and stitches inside and outside of the entertainer’s mouth. While most people would be merely inconvenienced by facial stitches, they proved to impact Carrie’s ability to sing.
“I felt like the differences were more in my head than they were in anybody else’s that would listen to the things I was doing. I had wanted to be in the studio sooner than I was, actually recording these songs, but I had stitches inside my mouth, outside my mouth. It was physically impossible … Going into the studio for the first time, it was a mind game: “Do I sound the same? Is my diction the same? Does my mouth move the same as it did before?” I would sing something and then look at [co-producer] David [Garcia] and be like, “Did that all come out clearly?” My m’s and b’s and p’s were kind of the issue. And he was like, “I thought it sounded great,” Underwood admitted during an interview with Vulture.
While Carrie healed and worked on pushing through the changes to her face, the Oklahoman opted not to seek the help of a vocal coach.
“I feel like you just kind of have to find your way through it. I don’t like it when people try to tell me how to sing, because it should be natural,” the singer-songwriter explained.
Though delayed due to Carrie’s injury, her Cry Pretty album dropped in mid-September. The record debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 chart, making Underwood the first woman to bring four country albums to the top of the all-genre chart— Cry Pretty (2018), Blown Away(2012), Play On (2009), and Carnival Ride (2007).
Next up, the songstress will be welcoming her second child with husband Mike Fisher and then kick off her The Cry Pretty Tour 360 with special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June in May.
