Country duo Brothers Osborne made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform just days after releasing their sophomore album, Port Saint Joe, on April 20th. They played their current single, “Shoot Me Straight,” in support of the new project.
The breakup anthem is currently sitting at No. 37 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart. It was written by Lee Thomas Miller and the boys of the band, John and TJ Osborne. The six-minute long song is essentially performed in two parts, the first half starting off with TJ and the second half ending with John. TJ Osborne shared that the song originally started off as a ballad, but when they added the intense guitar sections, it completely changed the direction of the song to be a whiskey-inspired rock song, and fans are loving it!
“We thought this lead single off of our new record would be a really great representation of just kind of what’s to come on this new record, but also was kind of a good little second story to ‘It Ain’t My Fault,'” TJ Osborne said, according to Nash Country Daily. “The song is really being about the double entendre of just the saying, ‘shoot me straight,’ ‘give it to me straight,’ but also make it burn like a shot of whiskey and shoot me straight. It’s one of the songs that kind of ties the last record into this one.”
It was also a risky track to lead with, considering the full version is over six minutes long.
“We knew it was us, and we knew it was different,” TJ Osborne said, according to CMT. “We knew that we liked it, and we like stirring up the pot.”
The track was nearly cut in half for their TV performance. However, it didn’t lose its message along the way. In fact, it might even pack more punch in its shortened version, especially with John Osborne’s guitar solo. Watch Brothers Osborne perform the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert below!
The two musically talented siblings earned two ACM Awards recently for Vocal Duo of the Year and Video of the Year for “It Ain’t My Fault.” One of their most popular hits is “Stay A Little Longer” from their 2016 debut album Pawn Shop and is their most-played hit on Spotify. They also just performed at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif. on April 28th.
