John Wayne Schulz was cut from season 10 of American Idol, which allowed Scotty McCreery to move on and eventually win the competition. This season he's back to win it. His first audition song was his own version of "The Dance" by Garth Brooks.

On Season 10 of American Idol, John Wayne made the top 40 before he was eventually sent back home. When the judges were picking the final group of contestants they chose Scotty McCreery over John Wayne Schulz.  Scotty McCreery eventually went on to win the entire competition.

John Wayne Schulz now admits being cut from Season was a blessing in disguise. His mother was soon diagnosed with cancer and passed away soon after the show. This allowed John, an proclaimed momma’s boy, to be with her mother the last couple months of her life. “It was a great thing to be with her the last few months of her life”, said John.

John is now back on the final season of American Idol with a new determination. “I’m definitely back with a fire inside of me to do the very best that I can.” says Schulz. “I feel like this is a great way to honor my mother’s memory.”

John Wayne Schulz – “The Dance”

“The Dance” Lyrics

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared ‘neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you’d ever say goodbye

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn’t I a king
But if I’d only known how the king would fall
Hey who’s to say you know I might have changed it all

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance
