The lack of women in country music has been a topic of discussion for years, and now Maren Morris is getting vocal about it.
Maren Morris is known for pushing boundaries in an industry that has plenty of them, such as what she wears and what she posts on her social media accounts. Her most recent campaign is against the male-dominated country music industry, an ongoing fight between the female artists that strive to gain equality with their male counterparts.
Morris recently took to Twitter to comment on the fact that country music radio says that “women don’t want to listen to women”.
“Enough “women don’t want to hear other women,” or “women don’t test well with ballads,” or “singles from new women artists aren’t reacting.” It is BS. Look at @RaeLynn , look at @CassadeePope , look at @lindsayell . Women that kick ass, write & play, & deserve power rotation” the “I Could Use a Love Song” singer tweeted.
She then went on to say “I hate even saying I’m “lucky” I got airplay on my first single. Yes, there were some amazing PDs and FANS that helped me, but I’m also proud as hell of writing those songs, and know anyone who puts their art on the line to be great deserves the same shot men get.”
Other female artists such as Martina McBride echoed Morris’ sentiment as all the female artists strive to bust through stereotypes.
Unfortunately, being represented isn’t the only discrimination women of country music have to deal with. Morris recently came under attack by some of her Instagram followers for posting a picture of herself in a revealing bodysuit.
Many of her fans came to her rescue when some not-so-nice people alluded to the fact that women who dress like Morris are “asking” for sexual harassment.
Not one to take nonsense lightly, Morris shot back with the below picture of her enjoying an In-N-Out cheeseburger and sharing her thoughts on the previous controversy her bodysuit picture caused.
Miranda Lambert commented “Girl I needed that today. And every day. All we can do is be who we are #cheerstocheeseburgers”.
Looks like the women of country music have each other’s backs and don’t plan to back down anytime soon. We hope Morris will continue to push the boundaries so we can all see growth in the female sector of country music.
