In Sunny Sweeney’s autobiographical “Bottle by My Bed,” the singer-songwriter addresses the struggle she and her husband, Jeff Hellmer, endured in the couple’s attempts to have a baby. The above video features both Sweeney and Hellmer, along with brief shots of several infants and parents.   This song and video is a heartbreaking story that many couples can relate with.

The lyrics to Bottle By My Bed were written by Sunny Sweeney and Lori McKenna.   In an interview about the song, Sunny stated “ I’ve had the title of the song and the line “All my friends are raisin’ babies, I’m still raisin’ Cain” for a couple years. I mentioned it to Lori McKenna, who is my hero in so many ways, but mostly because she is the mother to five amazing children. I knew she was the one to write it with. She understands what it’s like to have exactly what I want. She understands the love of a parent/child”.

Bottle By My Bed Lyrics

All my friends are raisin’ babies
I’m still raisin’ Cain
They must think because I’ve waited that I don’t want the same
Their days are spent changin’ diapers
They think mine are so exciting
Runnin’ off to where the light are so much brighter

It’s an empty room at the top of the stairs
Watchin’ the evening news with a couple of beers
I only call my husband baby because I love the word
Never wanted something so bad that it hurts
Even give up these damned old cigarettes
If I could have a bottle by my bed

My only bedtime story is a People magazine
I’d rather be in a carpool lane than this big cold limousine
I’d trade every pair of high heel shoes for a high chair in the dining room
Don’t even know you yet but I know I love you

It’s an empty room at the top of the stairs
Watchin’ the evening news with a couple of beers
I only call my husband baby because I love the word
Never wanted something so bad that it hurts
Even give up these damned old cigarettes
If I could have a bottle by my bed

We wait, we wait
It’ll be our turn someday

Spend a lot of afternoons daydreamin’ ’bout you
Right now our mortgage is the only thing that’s due

It’s an empty room at the top of the stairs
Watchin’ the evening news with a couple of beers
I only call my husband baby because I love the word
Never wanted something so bad that it hurts
Even give up these damned old cigarettes
If I could have a bottle by my bed

We wait
