This song was originally recorded by Doye O’Dell in 1948. Several other artists recorded the song, it was even recorded by an orchestra and chorus. The song has also been edited down a bit into the more simple lyrics it has now. Other notable versions of the song have been recorded by The Beach Boys in the 1960s and more recently by Martina McBride in 2008 and in 2013.
